Celebrated soprano Julia Doyle will sing at Dartington’s Great Hall on Friday, November 27 in a concert of Renaissance music which should feel at home in the medieval surroundings.
The international singer will perform a varied programme of 16th and 17th century music by some of Europe’s pre-eminent composers, including England’s William Byrd, Henry Purcell and John Dowland and Italy’s Giacomo Carissimi, all written to mark the short and tragic life of Mary, Queen of Scots.
Doyle has a prolific career as a soloist, performing alongside Europe’s most distinguished conductors, ensembles and orchestras – including with Sir John Eliot Gardiner at the BBC Proms. A critics’ favourite, she is establishing a dazzling reputation as a Renaissance and Baroque specialist with a busy schedule of tours, concerts and recording.
For this special performance Julia is joined by harpsichordist and composer James Weeks, an early music specialist and regular visitor to Dartington’s acclaimed International Summer School of Music, who is described by the Guardian as “one of the most inventive young composers and conductors out there.”
