A new grant from the Arts Council will allow Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery to integrate the work of three contemporary artists into its current redevelopment project.
Cllr Mitchell, Exeter City Council’s lead councillor for Environment and Leisure, told Arts+Culture: “These works of art will add to our collection, add to the visitor experience, expose our visitors to modern visual art and stimulate debate. The grant will ensure that the work of contemporary visual artists is central to the visitor experience when RAMM re-opens in 2011.”
London artist Nicky Hirst will create a display for the new central gallery. A collection of evocative smells will explore memories, experiences and collecting.
Paintings by Bath-based artist, Maria Lilac, referring to the history of paintings and the origin of their pigments will be integrated into the fabric of the refurbished buildings.
Leicester-based artist Michelle McKinney will create the impression of a flock of birds flying across the windows of the birds gallery in fine woven metal.
The £60,855 Grant for the Arts is part of the Arts Council’s work bringing great art to everyone by championing, developing and investing in experiences that enrich people’s lives. Their Grants for the Arts are for arts activities that engage people in England, or that help artists and arts organisations carry out their work.
