The summer exhibition at the Spacex gallery Exeter is refreshing called Underwater, and includes work by 10 international artists.
The sub-aqua line-up includes Daniel Gustav Cramer, Dorothy Cross, Cut and Scrape, Ellen Gallagher, Shirley Kaneda, Klaus Osterwald, Ed Pien, Janaina Tschäpe, Bill Viola, Seunghyun Woo.
Bill Viola presents a video where two lovers intertwine as they slowly descend into dark waters, exhaling their last breath together.
A drawing by Ellen Gallagher conjectures a monstrous creature that has evolved in the far depths – part natural history specimen, part science fiction. Other drawings by Ed Pien suggest a nightmarish underwater realm, in which ghastly creatures do battle.
More abstractly, Shirley Kaneda’s paintings are concerned with the state of liquidity – her precise yet free squiggles are a play on refraction and reflection.
The even will be launched by curator of the exhibition Angela Kingston on Saturday, July 17 between 3pm and 5pm with a talk at 4pm. It’s free and there’s no need to book
