A Wider Sky in Totnes

David Morgan

The name of David Morgan’s latest exhibition at the White Space Art gallery, Totnes – A Wider Sky – is a tribute to Welsh artist Kyffin Williams.

David’s turbulent pictures are completed outside in one sitting (that’s ‘en plein air’ and ‘à la prima’, but you knew that, right?) and capture an ever-changing landscape and are imbued with his response to the environment he’s working in.

He says: “I have been up to the moor on numerous occasions, painting for this exhibition and every time it never fails to fill me with wonder. How beautiful to stand on Holne Moor and look across to Yar Tor, the undulating land with all its nuances of light and colour is a painter’s delight.

“Along the Exe estuary and the Devon coast I have had similar feelings. It is not just the painting though – sail boats, seals, ospreys, Dartmoor ponies, skylarks and even the odd human encounter make each trip for me an amazing and thrilling experience. ”

To coincide with the exhibition, David took a day-long masterclass out on the moor itself, where he was to share his tips on how to capture images in the face of the elements.

David  Morgan’s A Wider Sky is at the White Space Art gallery, Totnes until Saturday, October 9.
