The countdown has egun for Plymouth’s cultural organisations now that British Art Show 7: In the Days of the Comet has opened its doors in Nottingham.
The show, which is the biggest and best exhibition of current British contemporary art, will arrive in Plymouth on September 17, 2011 and remain in the city until December 4, 2011.
Plymouth is one of only three locations outside London selected by the capital’s Hayward Gallery to host this prestigious touring exhibition, which will be supported by Plymouth City Council and Arts Council England and delivered by the Plymouth Visual Arts Consortium (PVAC).
“We’ve been planning for the show for some time but now it’s actually on display in Nottingham everything seems so much more real!” said Professor David Coslett, Dean of Arts and Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Plymouth and chair of PVAC – a partnership between Plymouth City Council’s museums service, Peninsula Arts, Plymouth Arts Centre, Plymouth College of Art, i-DAT, KURATOR, Zest: Arts for Health and Groundwork Trust.
“We’re privileged to be the final venue for the exhibition and excited about providing the ‘Grand Finale’ once it’s toured to Nottingham, London and Glasgow. PVAC members and a host of other organisations across the city are busy planning events and activities for the build-up and during the course of the show.
“There’ll be many opportunities for people of all ages and interests to get involved and enjoy the experience of the British Art Show. They may even get the chance to spot a future Turner Prize winner on their rise to fame!”
The British Art Show will feature works by 39 different artists. The works will be displayed throughout the city at venues such as Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery; Peninsula Arts Gallery, University of Plymouth; Plymouth Arts Centre and Plymouth College of Art.
The artists, chosen by curators Lisa Le Feuvre and Tom Morton, have been invited to produce their finest work for the show. Works on display will include painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, video, film and performance.
