Plymouth Museum calls for Christmas decoration donation

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery human history staff are looking for decorations, tree ornaments, nativity scenes or anything else that represents Christmas in the Plymouth area from the 1980s and earlier to add to its permanent collection,

“We’re keen to add some festive items to our collections as we don’t have many objects reflecting this fairly universal aspect of life,” assistant keeper of Human History, Rachel Smith told ArtsCulture. “Anything bought or used in the Plymouth area that dates from the 1980s, 70s, 60s, 50s or before would be fantastic – especially items that are in good condition and still in their original decorated boxes.”

The team is also keen to collect any interesting information about the objects.

“The story behind an object really brings it to life,” said Rachel. “Comments like ‘my mum bought me these baubles for my first Christmas in my own house’; ‘my brother and ‘I always loved setting up the nativity scene before my dad got home from work’ or ‘I remember buying these from Derry’s for my baby’s first Christmas’ will help to give objects a fuller history. The more information we can gather the better.”

To donate a festive item to the museum’s collections contact Rachel on 01752 304766 (Monday to Wednesday) or email rachel.smith@plymouth.gov.uk by Wednesday, February 23.
