Middle England's declining social skills examined in Cul De Sac at The Bike Shed Theatre, Exeter

In a quiet cul-de-sac in the middle of Middle England, three couples are about to find out that their lives mean little in the grand scheme of the universe, in Cul De Sac, a brand new darkly comic thriller by Script Slam winning playwright Neil Bebber, at Exeter’s The Bike Shed Theatre, from Tuesday, February 1 to Saturday February 12.

The play follows Tom and Ruth, who have never spoken to Gary and Karen, who have never spoken to Carla and James, who have never spoken to Tom and Ruth. But all of that is about to change – the three couples are about to come to terms with their place in the world, while realising their insignificance in the cosmos.

Neil, who won Script Slam Writer of the Year 2009 at the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff, for first short play, Seven People, said Cul De Sac “was borne from my frustration with what I perceive to be our dying social skills. What might it take to get disparate neighbours to talk to each other?

“This lead me to explore themes and motives for isolation and privacy, and how a catastrophe which imposed a timescale on our existence, might allow or compel us to reveal new aspects of our personality.”

This is The Bike Shed’s first in-house production of their spring season and continues their programme of new writing.
