Plymouth University

From Jane Austen to Thai Chai – Plymouth University students will be showing off their artistic talents to the public at a special event this week.

The School of Humanities & Performing Arts Degree Showcase marks the end of the degree course and will feature engaging live performance, concerts, talks, presentations, workshops and exhibitions.

The project has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the Knowledge Escalator Project which helps to enhance Higher Education’s contribution in the region’s economy.

The two-day event includes a talk by the English & Creative Writing department on the life and works of the famous novelist Jane Austen, and a walk back in time with the History team who will be showing a film on the history of Plymouth from the 1900s to the 1970s. Entertainment will be provided by Theatre and Performing Arts students by way of dance and Thai Chi, and Music students will give vocal demonstrations.

Associate dean and head of School of Humanities and Performing Arts, Dafydd Moore said: “This is a culmination of three years hard work by dedicated students at the university. We believe it sums up just how varied our work is across English & Creative Writing, History, Art History, Theatre, Dance and Music. We are incredibly proud of passion, creativity and talent on display.”

The event is open to the public and workshops will be available in creative writing, print demonstrations and poetry.

Other billed events include a talk from the editor of the student literary publication Ink Magazine and drama sessions from performance students.

The University of Plymouth Orchestra will provide the final piece – a performance of music by Charles Ives, Beethoven, John Williams and Terry Riley.

The event starts at 10.30am on Wednesday, May 18 in the Roland Levinsky Building.
