Plymouth College of Art is bucking the trend of the demisre in craft courses throughout the country by introducing a new Glass BA (Hons) programme from September 2011.
The new three-year programme will enable students to develop the skills to be a contemporary glass designer and maker, leading to work in glass studios, architectural studios, product design or self employment.
The new Glass BA along with other contemporary craft courses at Plymouth College of Art have been welcomed by the industry. Glenn Adamson, head of Graduate Studies at the V&A Museum, said: “At a time when craft education is threatened in British Higher Education, it is very heartening to see Plymouth taking on the challenge of imparting skills to the next generation.”
Tim Bolton, Plymouth College of Art’s academic director for Higher Education, said: “Glass at BA has been delivered at Plymouth College of Art for many years and this new course builds on our extensive experience and knowledge of developing and training students in glass making.”
Sue MacGillivray, programme leader for Contemporary Crafts, added: “You don’t have to have any experience in using glass prior to coming here, just an enthusiasm for making, designing and creating and of course a fascination with this amazing material.
“I became fascinated with glass during my own studies; it’s wonderful the way it flows when hot and is solid in its cold state. It is a material that is molten, reflective, flexible and seductive.”
For those who want to experience glass designing and making, the college is also launching taster workshops. People can register their interest by emailing marketing@plymouthart.ac.uk
