Would-be young poets in Plymouth will be demonstrating their ‘slamming skills’ this Friday in an exciting National youth poetry slam called Shake the Dust.

England’s performance poetry organisation Apples and Snakes launched Shake the Dust earlier this year, a nationwide youth poetry slam taking place across England from March to July 2012, with heats taking place nationwide and in Plymouth, in the South West in partnership with The Barbican Theatre, Spiel Unlimited and The Poetry Slam.

Shake the Dust is part of the London 2012 Festival, a 12-week nationwide celebration running from June 21 until September 9 2012 bringing together leading artists from across the world with the very best from the UK.

Young people from across the South West have been working with leading performance poets to write, perform and compete with words. The teams of 13 to 16 year olds have written, crafted and devised performance poems which will be showcased as part of the regional slam final happening Friday, June 15 2012 at The Barbican Theatre.

The highest scoring team from this event will go on to represent Plymouth at the National Shake the Dust Weekend.

Karen Lodge of The Barbican Theatre said: “We are so excited to be the South West venue partner on the Shake the Dust project. Being involved in Shake the Dust means that we are part of the growing spoken word landscape in Plymouth.

“What particularly interest’s us is young people’s voices and shining a spotlight on those that would normally be unheard.

“We have five excellent Plymouth schools and youth groups involved, the young people are so motivated to create work that shares their lives, stories and dreams. This is such a great platform for them to speak out from; I know we are going to have an incredible South West regional final.”
