Once, the Oscar-winning film turned into Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical, is at London’s Phoenix Theatre, where it’s managed to pick up six Olivier award nominations – including the top gong going, Best Musical.
Once combines romance, power and emotion along its musical journey – which even sees a willing and helpful banker join the emergent band (see, they’re not all bad).
It’s the story of a 30-something Dublin busker meeting his muse, who helps reinvigorate him and kick start his musical career in New York.
Expect all the energy and pathos of an Irish pub, with the music and mayhem to match. But as with all the best stories, the emotional journey isn’t straightforward, nor is it tied with a bow.
The Oscar-winning tune is the heart-tugging Falling Slowly. But it’s also grabbed a bagful of other awards, as a testament to smashing songs and a great story, which manages to be both touching and harsh.
The production at the Phoenix is starring Arthur Darvill (you know, Rory from Dr Who), and Zrinka Cvetisic (who won the inaugural season of the Croatian version of Strictly Come Dancing/ Dancing with the Stars!) as Girl.
