It’s great coming across an artist’s website where exploring the art work is a playful old-school experience, which is what happens with Bristol-based artist Matt Robinson’s site, whose show Knick Knacks or Beyond, Beyond, Totally Beyond, Perfectly Beyond, depending on what you read, is at the Solihull Gallery.
The official blurb says Knick Knacks had Matt working with two schools in North Solihull to create a couple of sculptures, from which Matt took his inspiration for his own commissioned work made specifically for the exhibition and shown alongside documentation of the your people’s work.
It seems an ideal collaboration, Matt describes his work as multi-faceted and created out of the spirit of play, with his colourful, engaging, bold work exploring, among other things, an absurd and warped sense of space and ‘a lavish over-indulgence in impaired reasoning. A primitive naïve mindset is knowingly adopted and played like a dark threatening wolf in sheep’s clothing.’
Add to this a reference bank which includes cartoons, comics and Animee, and you have the perfect vocabulary to take people on an other-wordly journey.
The private view is on Monday, October 3 between 6.15pm and 7.30pm; and there’s an artist’s talk on Thursday, October 20 between 6.15pm and 7.30pm
