Exotic storytelling and symphonic colour | Plymouth Symphony Orchestra

Plymouth Symphony Orchestra continues its 150th Anniversary Season with an exciting programme of orchestral masterpieces and operatic favourites – from sparkling celebration and lyrical beauty to exotic storytelling and symphonic colour.

Exhilarating

The concert opens with Shostakovich’s exhilarating Festival Overture, bursting with energy and orchestral brilliance. Renowned soprano Sky Ingram then joins the orchestra for a selection of some of the most popular and loved arias in the operatic repertoire. Sky is an international young dramatic soprano currently specialising in Verdi, Wagner & Strauss.

Magical

The arias showcase a rich variety of operatic heroines and unforgettable melodies. Dvořák’s enchanting Song to the Moon from Rusalka offers a moment of magical lyricism, while Lehár’s Vilja from The Merry Widow brings elegance and warmth. Puccini’s deeply moving Vissi d’arte from Tosca is dramatic and intense, before Wagner’s radiant Elsa’s Dream from Lohengrin transports the audience into a world of romance. The first half concludes with another Puccini favourite, One Fine Day from Madame Butterfly, one of opera’s most heartfelt and poignant arias.

Shimmering

Between the vocal works, Debussy’s shimmering Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune provides a beautiful contrast, its delicate, dreamlike atmosphere creating a moment of calm and reflection.

Magnificent

The concert concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov’s magnificent Scheherazade – a great orchestral showpiece. Inspired by the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, its vivid orchestration, soaring melodies and colourful storytelling bring to life a world of adventure, mystery and romance.
