Passion, drama, and dazzling colour | Plymouth Symphony Orchestra
Spanning passion, drama, and dazzling colour, the next Plymouth Symphony Orchestra concerts feature a programme of wonderful contrasts of music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries – from the sweeping romantic tragedy of Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture to Romeo and Juliet, to the lyrical brilliance of Max Bruch’s much-loved Violin Concerto in G Minor and the electrifying Firebird Suite (1919) of Stravinsky.
Following the Overture, Irène Duval joins the PSO for Bruch’s lyrical and virtuosic Violin Concerto in G Minor. French-Korean violinist, Irène has been praised for her ‘mastery of phrasing and of the dramatic dimension’ – Diapason, ‘astonishing virtuosity’ – Revelation Classiques, and her ‘infinite delicacy’ – Le Populaire du centre, has won multiple international competitions, and is an active performer of concerti, recitals and chamber music.
Vivid rhythmic energy
The atmosphere then shifts to vivid rhythmic energy with Manuel de Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance, a work full of Spanish colour and energy. The spirit of dance continues in a different form with Libertango, where Astor Piazzolla reinvents the traditional tango with intensity and irresistible pulse. A great contrast follows with the delicate stillness of Maurice Ravel’s Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte which is full of shimmering orchestral colour.
Dazzling
The evening concludes with Stravinsky’s dazzling Firebird Suite (1919). From magical mystery to triumphant radiance, it provides a spectacular finale to this programme!
