Us Against The World | ‘darkly funny, stunningly visual’ show about domestic abuse
Us Against The World, a new play from Rosie Race, is being staged at The Drum, Plymouth Theatre Royal, exploring the slippery slope between care and abuse, and the colossal strength it can take to break free from an outwardly-idyllic relationship.
“Although the theme of our show is important and difficult, audiences can expect to be entertained,” says writer, Rosie.
Rosie is a graduate of both Dartington College of Arts and RADA, currently serves as movement director and Associate Artist at Theatre Royal Plymouth, and was recently shortlisted for the Tony Craze Award, for another new play called Filthy Animal.
Angry and heartbroken
“I was angry and heartbroken after #metoo, as women all around me began sharing their stories. There is still so much to fight, and unfortunately recover from.”
Featuring movement-theatre, sharp dialogue, and poetic imagery, Rosie’s play Us Against The World promises to be a thought-provoking look into the often-hidden and widely misunderstood topic of coercive control.
Experience
“There is lived experience of domestic abuse within our team,” she told us.
“We have worked closely with others who have shared their own experiences in the development of this show. The work is extensively researched and based on first hand experience, but for safeguarding reasons it is no one person’s story.”
Humour, charm, truths
Audiences can look forward to an unusual blend of humour, charm and deeply uncomfortable truths.
“I use ‘visual poem’ – a term that was coined to review my work in the past – to express individuals’ emotional landscapes, and articulate things which are difficult to talk about.
“We hope the work will draw the audience into the complexity of psychological domestic abuse in order to challenge misconceptions, spread information and help combat the issue.”
So expect a riot of intoxicating movement-theatre, a very charming man, a much-loved chicken and a bit too much cake in this poetic portrayal of love gone wrong.
