The Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year is awarded to Uttam Kamati for his inspiring image Watering Melon. Kamati’s winning image depicts a husband and wife watering watermelon saplings on the Teesta river bed, in West Bengal, India.
The entries were judged on impact, composition, originality and technical ability by a distinguished panel of judges.
“The family in my image are shown watering melon plants,” Uttam Kamati told the Independent.
“Because of the erratic climate, farming in the river is becoming harder. I visited that area again at the very end of the season and heard that the family had run a huge loss this year due to an unexpected rainfall which ruined their heavy labour.”
The photograph, and over 100 shortlisted works, are on display at the Royal Geographical Society in London until July 10, 2015.
